🚫 Don’ts: Common Mistakes to Avoid

1. Don’t Put Essential Oils in the Ear Canal

Essential oils like tea tree or lavender are often promoted online, but they should never be used inside the ear canal. They can cause irritation or even worsen the infection.

2. Don’t Use Garlic Mullein Oil if the Eardrum is Ruptured

When the eardrum is intact, it acts as a protective barrier. If it’s perforated (ruptured), oils or other substances can pass into the middle and inner ear, where they can irritate sensitive tissues and potentially cause inflammation, pain, or even hearing loss. While garlic has antimicrobial properties, introducing any non-sterile substance into the middle ear can increase the risk of complications or worsen an existing infection.

3. Don’t Give Natural Remedies Inconsistently

Natural remedies often work best when given early and consistently. Skipping doses or using them sporadically reduces their effectiveness. If you’re using immune-supportive supplements or herbal ear supports, offer them on a regular schedule for the best results.

4. Don’t Delay Care When Symptoms Are Severe or Persistent

When to See a Doctor

Call your child’s doctor if you notice:

  • High fever (over 102.2°F or 39°C)
  • Persistent or worsening ear pain after 48–72 hours
  • Fluid or pus draining from the ear
  • Hearing loss, balance problems, or a stiff neck
  • Repeated infections (3+ in 6 months or 4+ in a year)
  • Any ear-related symptoms in infants under 6 months

Do All Ear Infections Need Antibiotics?

Not always. You usually have 2-3 days of ear pain before antibiotics are necessary! 

Viruses cause most ear infections, so antibiotics would not be effective, and these infections often resolve on their own. To many parents’ surprise, it has also been proven that bacterial ear infections can resolve on their own as well

Rule of thumb: In children over 2 with mild symptoms, a “watchful waiting” approach with natural remedy support is often safe. However, if symptoms worsen or don’t improve in 2–3 days, antibiotics may be necessary.
